Reed began his career as a surgical technician in the U.S. Air Force, primarily working on trauma surgery teams. An opportunity to work in insurance came in 1989 where he handled casualty, complex medical claims, coverage issues and then environmental litigation. He became the Director of Risk Management in 1998 for Parker Drilling, a domestic and international drilling/rental tool company where he was responsible for the insurance program, claims, Enterprise Risk and Crisis Management. Reed joined Hilcorp Energy Company in 2014 as they were beginning a series of large acquisitions in Alaska, New Mexico and other states. The role at Hilcorp includes managing all Master Service Agreements, the Approved Vendor List, Enterprise Risk, Credit Risk, company and Joint Venture insurance programs as well as captive management. He provides guidance on existing and potential risks, risk allocation, actuarial analysis and loss forecasts internally and with regulators. Hilcorp operates the largest post-combustion carbon capture-enhanced oil recovery (EOR) field in the world, partnering with NRG and JX Nippon Oil & Gas Exploration. Operating the field has provided numerous opportunities for Reed to use the carbon capture process, piping CO2 to south Texas, compressing and injecting the gas to increase oil recovery as an educational tool for his insurers. Reed enjoys studying various forms of energy, analyzing industry losses, sifting through various issues that impact the total cost of risk beyond the surface. He sits on several insurer advisory boards and is a member of several risk management organizations.
